Can anyone explain why......

I have a female mallard and she has been sitting on 12 eggs. Her 28 day setting period was up on Friday May 24th. Shes still sitting on her eggs and hissing when we get close to her. My question is,. Why on earth is she putting an egg into her water. So far we have found 2. One in the pool and one in her water bucket. She did the same thing last year and she didnt hatch any babies then. We was told she had already hatched and was a good mom to her babies. So what is going on? Just bad eggs or strange duck?

Do you have a drake to fertilize the eggs ? Broody ducks will sometimes roll the rotten eggs out of their nest.

yes she has 2 guys.

i would understand rolling them out but shes carrying them across her pen. at least 2 feet to the water bowl. we removed the pool due to all her eggs getting put in last year.

No sadly she is our hen at the current moment. We had an issue with a bobcat right before spring time came around. We are hoping to find another hen soon. But the 2 males (Huey & Louie) dont "over breed" her. They would take turns. 1 day Huey the next Louie. They dont bother her either. She stays on one side in her big ol nest. they stay next to the door of their pen. They get to play in a creek all day while she sits.

Haha ok this is not helpful and I’m sure she isn’t doing this but it reminds me of the egg float test to see if eggs are still good haha.

hahaha! yeah that would explain it.....but i just dont understand it! how long after her 28 days should i let her sit though? (i am inpatient right now! lol)

no she isnt a friendly hen. We got her and she isnt a "ill let you pet me kinda duck"
