Will these be any good for her????
I'd go with the calcium citrate, they'll be more concentrated than the gluconate powder which is difficult to give in large enough amounts. I started out using this, and found it wasn't able to help much, that's why I switched to calcium citrate tablets. Unfortunately the brand I use has a longer delivery, or else I'd reccomend them. The ones you found seem to be capsules rather than tablets, so you'd likely have to break them open and hide the powder in a treat, or mix with water and syringe it. I'm also in the UK so we can't easily get the ideal calcium gluconate. I'd put the powder from the capsules into a treat, like a blueberry, or even sprinkled over some peas. This would be the easiest first step in trying to give it to her
The video makes me think this is more likely an injury, I'd still go ahead with the calcium just to be on the side of caution though, as sometimes a stuck egg can put pressure on the nerves in the leg and result in lameness. Best to treat for both to be safe.
Ruth gave a great piece of advice, to put her in a deep bath of water and see how she's moving her legs, this could better show us the extent of the injury. My girl had a bad sprain way back, and it looked brutal but she healed in about a week, so try not to despair.
If everyone else agrees that it looks most like an injury, I'd suggest two things
- starting water therapy, cool water, as often as you can under supervision. This can help to bring down inflammation, and soothe pain.
- confining her to a small space, such as a dog crate. I'd keep her indoors and caged for a while so that she doesn't put too much pressure on her leg while it's healing.
It's important that we know the extent of the injury, so try the bath, and have a feel of her legs, be gentle and try to feel all the joints for swelling or heat. Is a vet a possibility for you? If so try to locate an exotics vet. I did this when my girl had a sprain, it costed about £80 for the veterinary exam and prescription, which was anti inflammatory pain meds- they made the world of difference for her while she recovered.
