!!! CAN ANYONE HELP WITH WHATS WRONG WITH MY DUCK?? !!!

Nothing surprises me I have 13 yr old Muscovy who should be done with laying and ever so often I'll find an egg so start with egg binding I would crush the calcium citrate though instead of forcing a large pill down her throat. does she have a special treat? you could give her some watermelon with the cal citrate or thawed peas if she likes them. Calcium gluconate may be harder to find that would be in a feed store or online. We have to be very careful giving pills or liquid to poultry so we don't cause them to aspirate. Let us know what you can get and we can give you info on how to give it. I would say it is either an egg or over mating.

Can you deep fill your bath and then put your girl in. Observe her leg movements while swimming. If it's not deep enough, she will not swim but you can observe her movement of legs dangling down and touching the bottom of the bath.

Please also feel round her vent and around her pelvis for lumps or tenderness

Hi thanks for your reply.

Yes I should be able to do that no problem.

It looks to me from the videos it’s something to do with one of the legs.

I’m wondering if when they have been cooped up last night they have gotten a little rough

I'd go with the calcium citrate, they'll be more concentrated than the gluconate powder which is difficult to give in large enough amounts. I started out using this, and found it wasn't able to help much, that's why I switched to calcium citrate tablets. Unfortunately the brand I use has a longer delivery, or else I'd reccomend them. The ones you found seem to be capsules rather than tablets, so you'd likely have to break them open and hide the powder in a treat, or mix with water and syringe it. I'm also in the UK so we can't easily get the ideal calcium gluconate. I'd put the powder from the capsules into a treat, like a blueberry, or even sprinkled over some peas. This would be the easiest first step in trying to give it to her

The video makes me think this is more likely an injury, I'd still go ahead with the calcium just to be on the side of caution though, as sometimes a stuck egg can put pressure on the nerves in the leg and result in lameness. Best to treat for both to be safe.
Ruth gave a great piece of advice, to put her in a deep bath of water and see how she's moving her legs, this could better show us the extent of the injury. My girl had a bad sprain way back, and it looked brutal but she healed in about a week, so try not to despair.
If everyone else agrees that it looks most like an injury, I'd suggest two things
- starting water therapy, cool water, as often as you can under supervision. This can help to bring down inflammation, and soothe pain.
- confining her to a small space, such as a dog crate. I'd keep her indoors and caged for a while so that she doesn't put too much pressure on her leg while it's healing.

It's important that we know the extent of the injury, so try the bath, and have a feel of her legs, be gentle and try to feel all the joints for swelling or heat. Is a vet a possibility for you? If so try to locate an exotics vet. I did this when my girl had a sprain, it costed about £80 for the veterinary exam and prescription, which was anti inflammatory pain meds- they made the world of difference for her while she recovered.

You should be able to determine if it is one leg from the bath swim test! Plus hydrotherapy is good for injuries

So while giving her a warm bath ALSO noticed this on her back. Looks like some kind of scabbing. Put some warm water over it and bathed it. To the touch it’s also very hard so not sure how long this has been there but certainly haven’t noticed this before.

After her hydrotherapy she was walking around a little better, still with a slight limp but the rest and bathing seemed to have helped.

She was eating peas and her normal food and seemed to be passing waste too.

Just this latest find now….. is this scabbing normal as she is malting at the moment
