My one hen (I only have two) spends a long time in the nesting box in their coop. This got me to wondering how long the egg laying process takes - can anyone explain this to me please?

Ain't that the truth? A month ago, one of my hens was walking across the yard, did the "poop squat" and an egg popped out behind her. The same hen spent 3 hours in the nest box yesterday. I was starting to think she was playing at being broody....

This is very interesting, I wonder what causes the change?

Can the hen try to lay the egg before it is altogether formed?

My one hen came out of the nesting box once with a large membrane hanging out of her bum which she subsequently dropped and I grabbed it before they started eating eat - didn't want them to get any ideas! Well, when I looked in the nest she had just layed the yolk! I was wondering if she had got a fright and not completed the process?

Backyard Poultry magazine in the latest, (FEb./ March 2010) issue has an article entitled "The Laying of an Egg!". It has alot of good information.

I am sure you will also get alot of good replies here.
