Roosters don't become nice with tender love and care. Roosters are either your boss, or you're the boss of them. They're not your friends, and thinking they are is a great way to get hurt at some point.

I'd also cull the rooster. Why on earth keep a mean bird, and absolutely don't risk passing the mean gene on!
