Can Chickens get Arthritis??????

Guess only time will tell(hopefully) if it's frostbite or sudden exacerbation of arthritis from the cold.

Thanks for all the help! She's been eating and drinking a lot since she came in and seems to be feeling a lot better! I'm hoping that it's nothing more than than a plot to get in the house... :D

Will you put her back outside soon?
@BantyChooks taught me about 'cold reset'. I bring bird into the slightly warmer garage for just a couple-few hours. Makes sure she eats, give her a dose of electrolytes, see what's coming out the other end, and just observe. Then take them back out to coop, has 'saved' a few here, it's pretty amazing how they bounce back.

I can't remember.....
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!

I'll probably put her out in a ten minutes or so. She's been drinking a lot of water with the electrolytes in it so that's good! I'll probably bring her back inside one more time tomorrow just to check on her. Her toes are bending completely now! If we keep going at the rate we are, she'll be back on the roost in no time!

Glad that she is moving a little better. It still looks like her ankles are a little enlarged in the latest picture, but the pink is visible between her toes. So that is a good sign that it isn’t frostbite ankles can be from MS (mycoplasma synovitis) or other bacterial or viral joint infections. MS is chronic and can make their legs sore. There is really no good treatment for MS, like there is with MG. Here is some reading about MS, and at the bottom a picture of possible MS:

I've got an old hen, Lady Gaga, who's almost 8 years old. I didn't realize something was wrong until tonight, when I went to shut up the chickens. She was sitting in the corner of the coop underneath the roost. Even though she's old, she has never failed to get up on the roost until tonight. I picked her up and put her on the roost, where she lost her balance after trying to find her footing. I put her up once again and noticed that her foot seemed to be the problem. I brought her into the barn and tested her feet and legs.

The first leg I tested was okay. It lifted up and down and I was able to bend the toes. It didn't seem too warm or cold.

The second leg was the problem. She was willing to stand and put her weight on it and didn't complain when I lifted it up and down. I tried to bend her toes and found that they were stiff. I felt around, and her foot/ankle area seemed to be, in a way, "frozen".

I don't know if this is just her meeting her end - she is getting up in her years - or if it's something else. Can chickens get arthritis?

Yes Yes chicken got all sorts of diseases that are also mentioned in human medical history . Cause everything at some points runs the same .
chickens get Gout , Arthritis and one of the accounts i followed on instagram her rooster had arthritis and he died recently . theres no treatments except the painkillers Carprofen but the sideeffet of this drug is that it ruins the heart .

I went out to the coop and it's not looking good. She was lying on the ground. I brought her inside and she's breathing. But otherwise nothing else. I want to give her water but I don't want to drown her. Her bum is a mess too, and I don't know if I should give her a bath. I know she probably won't make it, with the point she's at, but I want to do everything I can.

Sorry but, a bird that old with those symptoms, I'd euthanize.

So sorry that she is not well. I would not bathe her, but try to just wipe her off, and place her on a clean towel or puppy pad. A bath for a chicken that is gravely ill, can push them over the edge. We see that here often on the emergency forum. I am so sorry that she is worse. I would just try to make her comfortable and keep her warm. If she is awake at some point, hold a little cup up to her beak and offer electrolyte water, but don’t force it. With the weekend here, if you lose her, you would need to keep her body cold and wrapped in plastic, and contact your state poultry vet for a necropsy on Monday am to find out what was wrong. It would be good to know if she had MS or something else. Not sure what state you are in, but here is a list of state vets to contact:
