Can chicks breath through an eruption or a pip hole?

I had a duckling make a little crack/eruption in the egg but didn't make an actual hole. I waited 10 hours and made a tiny hole for her because I couldn't find anything on the internet that answers this question. Is a pip a hole or when there are cracks in the egg and not the membrane?

That pip looks fine and normal. Even though you may not be able see fully there will be a tiny break through of the membrane under the cracked shell.

Good luck with your hatch :fl

I only saw membrane under the eruption but some how it lived under that eruption for 9 hours! I couldn't take it so I made a tiny hole where the eruption was. I'm very sure there was no hole. . . but if it lasted 9 hours after the internal pip . . doesn't this mean that it can breath through the membrane under the eruption?

I can see that the membrane is breached.

Good to check tho, being very careful of veins.
Did you see beak?
Side pips(not thru air cell) can take longer to zip.

It is best to leave the eggs alone as much as possible during lockdown.

The pip in the egg in the picture is perfectly fine! It can take a day for a chick to hatch after pipping. Ducks can take a day longer.

It is not helpful to add add holes in the eggs and it can be dangerous in that you could kill the chick. Each time you open the incubator you can lower the hatch rate too

Incubators are unnatural and I believe that helping a chick hatch is fine as long as you’ve done tuns of research. Mother ducks actually help their ducklings hatch a bit. I have an undergrad in biology so maybe that helps. I helped one that was hatching the wrong way; pointy end. All my chicks hatched and are doing great.
