I have week old chicks that have been locked in a large dog crate with Momma hen inside the coop. I want to start letting them mix with the flock, but I am afraid that if they follow Momma hen out into the run, they are too tiny to make it back up the ramp into the coop!

I am thinking of putting a barrier a few inches high across the pop door opening to keep them in but let the big chickens come and go freely.

What do you think? Suggestions? Do you think they will be able to get back up the ramp?

Really? Hmm, DH seems to think I should just let them out tomorrow. I'll be home from work by 4:30, well before dusk, so as long as momma hen stays with them if they can't get back in, they should be ok...

Maybe I'll make a small barrier, if they can jump it to get out, they will probably be able to get back in again too then.
