can different breeds of quail mate each other?

if they are the same "breed" then no problem - ie silver coturnix plus brown coturnix plus white coturnix, all different breeds of the same species. But if by "breeds" you mean "species", then no - species should be kept separate and most of the time do not interbreed. Good way to check is if all the eggs are speckled, they are all coturnix regardless of what breed. If the eggs are white, they are likely bobwhite eggs with a slight possibility of them being californias/gambels/etc. All the bobwhite breeds can be housed together and all the coturnix breeds can be housed together and can mate and produce fertile eggs, but bobwhites and coturnix shouldn't live together. I have done it before but it's risky, I would not reccomend it. What colour are your eggs?
Besides it being risky due to aggressiveness of bobwhites did you run into any other problems of attempting to interbreed bobwhite and coturnix? For instance if they were raised as chicks together and then attempted breeding. Could they produce fertile eggs to hatch and grow for meat purposes?

I have read that hunters cross Bob Whites with Coturnix for a less flighty training bird. Offspring will be mules, or sterile.

Di you happen to know what color eggs the offspring layed? Were they seasonal layers? Curious if the mules would be good pens to have for food eggs

Can coturnix mate with california ?

FYI, this thread is 8 years old, so you probably won't hear from the OP.

To answer your question, they are different species. While they may mate, the chance of offspring is close to zero, and if one happens, it will be infertile and most likely have a very short life.

yep they're all coturnix eggs - all from the same species so regardless of what colour they turn out to be, they can live together and breed and make fertile offspring.
Is there a guide anywhere to help identify all quail eggs?
