If you're not comfortable with someone else around your chickens, you probably wouldn't be comfortable with their collecting eggs either. You might lose some eggs to freezing but it's not going to be a big loss. You might consider finding a way to hang water so they can't kick stuff up into it very well. You could also set it up higher, or put something under it like a scrap of plywood, so there are no shavings or hay or whatever right next to the water. Just thought, a rollaway nest would be great for vacations; they wouldn't be able to walk on them or knock them around and break them. Might not save the eggs but might save a mess.
