My 3 year old silver laced Wyandotte suddenly became very lethargic tonight. She seemed normal all day, and when I went to lock them up for the night she was laying in the nest box. She laid a normal egg earlier today and yesterday. She’s never had problems laying. Her comb and waddles look more pale tonight. She hardly wants to move at all.
I brought her in the house and set her up in a crate for overnight. She drank a lot and ate a little. She’s fluffed up and keeping her eyes closed. She has free range time but it’s supervised, and I can’t think of anything she got into.
If she’s been laying eggs normally and I know for sure she laid an egg today, so she can’t be egg bound, right? I’m always worried about that. I’m not sure what else could be wrong. Her crop was small and soft tonight. I’ve had her in for about an hour but I haven’t seen her poop yet. Feel free to chime in with any thoughts. Here’s how she’s standing, but she will lay down too.
I just gave her some Safe-guard paste in case this is caused by parasites.

How is she doing?

She doesn't look like she's feeling well. Did she every poop? What was that like? (photo?)

Drinking a lot but not eating much - I would check her crop first thing in the morning to see if it's empty.
Feel her abdomen for bloat/fluid as well.

Generally they are not egg bound if they are laying, but they could still be having some reproductive problems. I assume the eggs were normal since you didn't mention anything "odd". Did you happen to open/use the eggs? Anything unusual?

You gave safeguard - what dose? Are you wanting to treat for just roundworms or other types of worms as well?

Thankfully she is doing well now. She’s a very lively and talkative bird, and she was pretty sick on Saturday night. She seemed totally fine earlier that day.

I took her in the house Saturday night around 7pm. By 10 pm she still had not pooped and her crop was bigger then it should be by that point in the evening and soft/ squishy. I started massaging her crop and a minute later she took a big nasty poop (pic below). She pooped a little more one more time overnight.

Her eggs have been normal. I just always worry about egg binding/ EYP every time one of my layers act off.

I gave her .2ml Safeguard (found dose of .03 ml per pound, estimated her at about 7 pounds). I didn’t have a specific parasite I was treating for, but since I thought she looked more pale than usual and I had Safeguard in hand, I gave it to her just in case.

The next morning her crop had shrunk but I could feel it was hard and still had stuff in it. She was much more alert and talkative, so I let her go back out for the day yesterday (Sunday). As the day went on she became more active. I saw her poop small normal amounts a few times throughout the day. By evening she seemed pretty normal but I brought her in overnight to monitor her.

This morning (Monday) her crop was empty and she had a few normal poops overnight. She seemed to have made a full recovery. Not sure what caused her problem in the first place, and I will continue to keep a close eye on her, but hopefully this problem has resolved.

Glad she's feeling better.
I would monitor her crop for a few days and check her breath as well. She may be getting sour crop, hard to know.

Dosage for Safeguard (Fenbendazole) is 0.23 ml per pound of weight given orally once and repeated in 10 days to treat Roundworms only. If you want to treat other types of worms give for 5 days in a row.
