Can hens have bad reaction to oil soaking method for scaly leg mites?

Ive been checking the poop and not seen anything nasty or worms but im sure its not related but ive had two pointy shaped eggs from one of my girls ? Is that another thing to be worried about

She has quite a swollen foot. It could all be related to the SLM, but I would take a look at the bottom of the foot for any scabs that would indicate Bumblefoot.

The Grapeseed oil should have been fine to ingest.

Phew! ! One less thing to stress about! ! Ill keep it as a quirky trait that i get pointy shaped eggs!

Look forward to the leg photos.

The pointy shaped eggs, well...some eggs just come out that way. If both hens are doing it and they are the same breed, I would be inclined to mark that up to genetics.

I think she had a reaction to injesting tea tree. It makes them act odd if they eat it, even just a little bit. :)
I only sprayed the wooden parts of coop as rest is metal and let it dry out before they were allowed back in and her oddnees started 30-40min after doing the oil thing.. As long as i don't poison her out of kindness!! Id be acting all funny too if i gad to eat that!

Aye, but if you could still smell it she could have injested it or rather inhaled it to the point of a small injestion reaction. You didn't poison her but you did make her trip out.:)

Photos and update.
Dont think they have crop issue but after a good hr trying to get them!! Salty . The one with the funny walk and who had the worst amount of lice.. She is the 1st in pics. Not as many as before and the DE gas bound itself to what i think are eggs at feather ends? ? She also has a spur on one leg only.. Definitely got scaly leg. .But after oil siak.. Actually look, a tad better. Video hopefully will load and you will see the weird leg thing.
Betty is all ok this morning . Slight scratching but in a better way.. Haven't done close check on her yet but the suprise was Pepper.. The one who is still flighty but was rather well behaved while i looked her over. .Not as bad with lice but i saw some in your eye corner and spotted little red mites in her comb only and a few around eye which she let me remove. Her feet are just as, bad and swollen but not scabs underneath on both of them. Poo check pic seems ok minus thick powdery on one which may be the DE ..Onky betty had 3 black tar ones.

Now. .What can i do now to ease there discomfort and kill them off. No money till Tuesday next week but im thinking a bath might be next step?? Any advice greatly accepted !

Yes, I see the lice near the eye. Those are lice eggs on the base of the feathers.
She has Scaly Leg Mites, but in the photo I also see what looks like possible Bumblefoot between the toes, so take a closer look at that when you can.

I know it's hard to catch some hens for treatment, the easiest way to get them is when they are roosting. Either get them early in the morning before they get up or take them from the roost at night.

You don't mention your weather, but I assume you are in the US and it's summer. If you do bath them, I would be inclined to do it early, this way they don't get chilled overnight. Some people do bath their chickens to help rid of lice, if that is what they can do for the time being. A little dish liquid in your bath water should do the trick for lice. It won't kill the nits (eggs) but will help give them temporary relief until you can get the Permethrin in the coming week.

Lice and mites have a different life cycle. For mites you would repeat treatment in 7 day intervals while lice you need to repeat treatment 2-3times in 10 day intervals. To kill the ones that hatch. I would probably repeat a couple of times every 7 days since you are seeing red mites too - those feed on blood and weaken a chicken, lice are more of an irritant, but a heavy infestation can make a chicken sick too.

The oil on the legs is a good way to treat Scaly Leg Mites, if you can find it, Nu Stock Cream also works very well, but it's a little pricey, imo. Other oils you can use are coconut oil, castor oil or even vaseline - basically you are smothering the SLM:)

Hopefully getting the SLM and taking a look at that foot, she will start walking better. I feel that those 2 things are making her uncomfortable.

Thank you for the photos and videos. They are pretty girls.
