We just bought 6 new chicks 4 days ago and I already think we need more.
This is our first experience with chickens. We have 3 acres, so we have plenty of room.
Currently we have 2 barred rocks, 2 silver laced Wyandottes, 1 Columbian Wyandotte and 1 blue Andalusian. We are strictly in it for the eggs, what would you add to that flock and is it safe to do so a week in? I am thinking of adding 4 more.

Also, at this point I am undecided between free ranging and building a large run. The neighbors are fine with free ranging. (If that decision affects what we should get next)

You already have a nice selection of pullets. No problem adding chicks for the next week or two For me it's all about a colorful egg selection and decent layers A few EEs, a welsummer and Leghorn would make a super flock.

Leghorns are always great for egg production but depending on where you live it might get too cold for them. I absolutely love Golden Comets and almost any other Rhode Island Red mix will surely produce a ton of eggs, or even Rhode Island Reds themselves. Black Australorps are good layers too (one hen holds the record for most eggs in a year : 364).

This thread is quite old, OP hasn't been active for three years:D

I very highly recommend Buff Orpingtons! They are all around good layers and have great personalities.
My Pecan is my favorite chicken and she is a Buff Orpington. She lays 3 double yolkers a week during summer.
They lay brown eggs if that is what you are looking for about 4 times a week.
Here is a great website to find out a little more information on Buff Orpingtons:
