Can I breed broodyness back in? Inky poroblem to...

I had a young male Bob like this...he wanted everybody out of the aviary and looked as if he was trying to kill everybody in there, males and females! I had to cage him for one year and he had no mate till he was 2 years old. The bird was nuts! LOL Eventually he calmed down and a female decided, after no other male was left to take, that he would have to do. I was nervous for days as to whether he was going to kill her, but he was very gentle with her and they have been paired ever since.

Having nothing else to do but watch your birds is a good thing! You will learn more about them as birds and their behavior. In the future you will have more knowledge as to who acts this way or that, you will know what to do to keep them proper and can spot sick birds a mile away. Great job!

GD, I would say it might be a good thing. You have them in mated pairs, and one of the males is "defending" his and his mates territory. You might get broody quails after all =)

Wow, yeh, that was what it looked like, he just wanted them out of the pen.

Cracking on with their new pen tomorrow for Little Male & his Mate since they are currently hogging the bottom half of my buck rabbits double hutch (It locks off from upstairs), So far its a 6ft x 3ft hutch with the tray removed, legs cut off so the hutch can be placed directly on the grass & a small door cut in the back of the wired section

I'm going to build a big run on the back so the birds can go from the shelter of the hutch into the run.

They really are spoilt birds.

I have a question.

When I switched the light on earlier & went outside, the Big Male grabbed Golden Hen & mounted her. She sort of squeaked & scurried & it looked like he fell off, I saw him bring his tail down, but whether he got to her vent
idunno.gif
, but is this a sign she may start laying soon if he's trying to mate with her?

Oh, yeh, I've got an outdoor light by the pen now that switches on at 5:30pm & off at midnight, its so I can see out at night because we've had a fox barking a few doors down. There's also been a light installed in the chicken coop & extra locks are being fitted today.

And its 4:35AM here & I'm obsessing about my birds to you lot

I have hardly slept since I bought these animals, they are so obsessive! I just want to be out there enriching their pens & building new ones & gardening.

Basically, I quit work to start a family, but I haven't fell pregnant..... that was 3 years ago & DH is happy enough with me not working, so I spend all day with the animals & the home & garden. But, since I'm always home, we also get people stopping by randomly at all hours of the day.

Similar situation to me, except for the work bit... I'm starting the ball rolling for getting tested. Have you been tested yet?

Kinda enjoying not having any kids though. Plan on starting to learn how to snowboard this month!

GD, I understand. I have been pregnant twice... miscarriages. It is nice to be able to focus on something else! Also, yes! Your birds are spoilt ;)

Update:

The Golden Hens now letting the Big Male mount her. But we are having a 100MPH gale & I've had to take the quails light down for tonight.

And yes, I was having recurrent early M/C's. The doctors wouldn't perform more tests on me beyond a hormone test & an ultrasound scan until they had checked out DH who wouldn't get checked because it "wasn't him"

.

In a way I enjoy not having kids though to, I'm just getting on with life in general. I'm only 22, DH 26, so there is no rush.

I like life as it is & actually stopped TTC about 8 months ago. The heartache from the M/C's just became too much & I got tired of obsessing about it, so I went on B/C.

I'm getting the blood tests and ultrasound within the next month... I'm 28 though so a little older. If it turns out we can't have them I want to adopt.

As well as 'adopting' lots of little quailies

My male is going at it like crazy. He is gentle, but seems like he favours one hen in particular as she has a bald patch forming!

I hope you come back clear, although then you'll be having to go through more checks....

And yes, of course more quailies makes up for an awful lot in life

especially chicks!

I practice FAM as B/C now, I also use the Persona monitor with it, Its been reliable so far, although if I'm having a fertility issue anyway of course it will be!

I first started charting to conceive about 2 1/2 years ago, but just kept at it.... I like knowing exactly were I'm at in my cycle. I use the TCOYF software, its pretty good

All my checks came back clear, although I've always had issues with agonizing, heavy AF which keeps me in bed for 3 days. This month I only hauled my butt up to tend to the animals whilst high on painkillers

then crawled back into bed. My charts are all normal though.

We are having bad gales here at the moment, I checked my quail. They are hunkered down, but not huddling. Yet they are in the open in their pens. Its very cold, wet & windy.

They've got plenty of shelter, but neither pair is using it. They don't look cold, just normal. How hardy are the Jumbo Coturnix variety?

I love animal husbandry, it really De-stresses life.

I think they are pretty hardy. Being so low to the ground they don't feel it as much.

Awful winds here too. Husband came home to find one of our shed roofs completely missing, and a drainpipe torn off (probably by the flying shed roof.

Update:

We had a problem. One of the quail stuck its head through its wiring & a chicken apparently pecked it
hmm.png
she bled & has been moved into a quarantine shed with her mate Whilst I rethink her pen. Also her mate is not breeding her....

BUT woke up this morning to 1... no, 2 EGGS. One in the outdoor pen & one in my living room (Little Male & his mate where brought in so I could keep an eye on them last night. She's healed well from her peck,)

So, we have eggs.

Any ideas why little Male isn't mating with her? I have not seen him once mount her, while Big Male mounts his hen every day in the morning.

Big male tries to mate her when placed with him, but she runs away
clap.gif
& he chases her grabbing whatever he can reach.

I've also noticed he only mates Golden Hen once a day, but a new female gets mated repeatedly. Needless to say, I removed her because she was chucking herself at the pen side trying to fly away from him because he wouldn't leave her alone.
