I am thinking about getting some ducklings, layers, and Silkie chicks this coming up spring would this work in a 8'x3' brooder? Also what breeds of layers and ducklings should I get?

I will never brood ducklings and chickens together again. The ducklings are just plain messy and like to try to keep everything wet, this causes stink and illness in the chicks. I'd strongly advise brooding them separate.

Large fowl and bantam chickens are fine together.

Ducks and chickens brooded together? no, i wouldn't. I tried it for like i think less than 2wks and just about pulled my hair out lol It was my daughters silkies and my two buff orpington ducks.. the chicks pecked at the ducks, the ducks flooded the brooder... no, i shudder even thinking about it [IMG]

Ducklings should be kept separate, their natural instinct is to splash in the feeding water and that will get the bedding all wet.
