Can I eat uncracked egg that had yolk on the outside?

Sometime in the last few hours one of my 2 year old rir laid an egg. There was a bit of yolk on it, but I rinsed it off and it looks fine, no cracks. As far as I know my hens have not tried to eat their eggs since they first started laying a couple of years ago. I did not see any shell and just cleaned up the yolk from the bedding in the nest box. I haven’t been keeping track but they seem to lay one egg a day between them, it’s been hot here so I’m thinking that it’s the weather but wondering if it’s possible one of them ate part of the other egg. When we were getting two eggs, they would usually lay beside each other and there may have been the odd crack but nothing the hens cracked further to eat. The coop is predator safe so it was not another animal. Any thoughts on what happened? I cleaned the yolk off and was going to have it for lunch, is it safe to eat?

If the egg isn't cracked it's fine. I had that happen all the time, if I didn't get the eggs first thing. A couple of my hens would eat the eggs if they were left too long.

Check the chicken's beaks, if they have been eating eggs they are sure to have egg on their beak.
