Can I encourage hens to become broody?

I'd like to strengthen my flock this year. New chicken mom so just learning. I figured I would try the natural way first. I fluffed up one of the nester boxes and made it look comfortable to sit in and put the eggs that were laid that day in there (2). Came back later and my evil hens ate them. Thinking I will continue collecting them for myself for now but maybe set up a fluffy box with 4 plastic easter eggs so they will be inspired. Any suggestions?

What breeds are your hens? Many breeds have a very low incidence of broodiness. Allowing a hen to build up a clutch may help to trigger broodiness.
