Can I feed 4 day old chicks crushed up peanuts???

sigh.......PeepDaddy wants to give my babies crushed up peanuts as a treat.....this is a long story.....Can he???

He gets so excited when he comes home with his Sundae "snack" at night (EVERY night) I have already cuaght him crushing them up with excitement!! Will it hurt the chicks?

I have been giving them gravel "just in case" my kids (or him) give them something without my knowing....

It won't hurt them. Remember when they are hatched by mom and allowed to roam they eat alot of stuff we wouldn't think of giving them. I watched one of my feral cats that come in the house at nite now that it is cold taking catfood from the bowl and jumping up on the chick playpen and drop it in, then she sits there and watches them fight over it. She will repeat this numerous times if we don't intvene. I have to add this feral cat sleeps in the chicken coop with the chickens when she doesnt come in at nite. We can almost touch her, but the chickens can sit on her, rub on her and eat out of her bowl. It is really weird.

I would also make sure they are not salted.

If they are unsalted, they would be fine as a treat. In moderation, it is a good source of extra protein.

So long as they are from a good source. Improperly harvested or stored peanuts can carry aflatoxins. Very deadly. That's a risk with all improperly stored grains as well. I would not feed peanuts or grains that were being given away or thrown out for any reason unless they were still more than considered fit for human consumption.

Crushed as a fine crumble, fed only as a treat ( not everyday ), unsalted, then you should be Ok, just be careful Ok.
