can I feed baby chicks regular chicken feed blended up instead of chick starter?

Hens and roosters can eat chick starter at any time. It will never hurt them. If a hen is laying, she will need more calcium, so offering oyster shell on the side is recommended if you're feeding laying hens starter feed.

Chicks cannot eat layer. The extra calcium causes bone issues, kidney issues, eventually kidney failure, and death. On top of that, it doesn't have enough protein that chicks that are growing need. Growing bigger and growing feathers takes a lot of protein.

Buy the 50 pound bag. Your broody hen can eat it no problem, and your other hens can too. Eating it for a little while until the bag is gone probably won't cause an issue with their eggs either even if you don't have oyster shell for them to eat.

I feed my chickens gamebird pellets, the hen, rooster and chicks eat it while the hen also gets a bowl of oyster shell grit and layers pellets, though she is off the layers now she is brooding chicks. They also get a little scratch (it is wild bird seed, but looks exactly like a bag of chicken scratch) and finch seed mix. All my birds are healthy and strong and my youngest batch of chicks are already getting their wing feathers.

The chicks have some crushed up cat food mixed in with the gamebird pellets that are also crushed up into crumbles, as well a little finch seed mix. They have rough sand as a grit to help them digest the finch seed, which is millet and a bunch of other grass seeds.

I have quite a few sacks of gamebird feed pellets and finch seed mix as that is also what I feed my quail with. :p
