i just got 6 new coturnix quails today.
i've raised quails before but never from this young of a chick. they were just hatched two days ago.

now i only have 6 chicks and i know quails mature really fast. i'm probably not going to raise quail chicks again so i didn't want to get the bags of game starter feed from the feed store since most of it will go to waste.

i was wondering if it is possible to raise them on chick starter? the person i bought them from told me that if i feed them boiled egg yolk with the chick starter they should be fine and i was wondering if anyone else here has tried feeding their coturnix quail chicks regular chicken chick starter?

I've used as low as 20% protein without any problems. I'm now just going to raise everyone on a 21% protein mash that's locally milled ($19.50 for 100lbs vs $13 or so for 50lbs of starter crumbles). Now, everyone says that medicated is bad, because the levels are mostly too high for quail, but I've been feeding my newly hatched quail 30% starter with BMD medication in it. I was given this by accident when I tried to buy an unmedicated starter, which is why I'm now just going to buy the 21% and be done with it.

ETA: I never add anything else to the chicks' diets.
