I thought that the difference between chick starter and grower was that starter had more protein so thats why you had to feed them starter when they were really young but at my feed the packages both said that they both contained %20 protein.. So my question is if I can crush up the grower into smaller and then feed that to my chicks.

What do you guys think?

If all the ingredients are the same %, I don't see why not. But if the grower has higher % ingredients, you might want to stick to starter.

What i am trying to say is you dont want to feed them something stronger too soon.

Actually you do want them to have the highest protien soon. The main difference between grower and chick starter is pellet size and most of the time the starter has anti cocci agents in it, otherwise known as "medicated."

A lot depends on the feed Mfg. but for the most part the only real difference between a Starter and a Grower is that the Starter should contain more protein.

Is the feed that you are talking about put out by the same Co.?

yes. The labels both say %20 protein which I though was odd..
Are they made by the same company and who is the company, does one say Starter and the other Starter - Grower by chance?

Sorry for all the questions just trying to help some.

Chris

They are a canadian brand (I'm from canada) so arent a big chain but they are Top shelf feeds inc. and no worries better safe than sorry. And it was grower or starter. It didn't say starter/grower

Without seeing a photo copy of the two bag labels, I just say this. Chickens have survived for thousands of years on various diets.

Here, the local feed mill only has Starter/Grower, an all purpose type product. If both your choices were both 20% protein, your chicks would likely thrive on either one being fed. I'd not be overly concerned. Not at all.
