Can I give my week old chicks sod without grit? (I don't have any grit.)

I wouldn’t. The dirt in the sod will act as grit, but there probably isn’t enough dirt or big enough pieces of it to counter the amount of grass they will eat from the sod.

What you can do is make a little “daytime pen” in a grassy area, and let them scratch around in there. They will probably peck up enough gritty stuff that way. But I myself would still give them chick grit in that daytime pen if they aren’t on full time free ranging with access to all sizes of pebbly material.

If you can pull up a clump with roots, dirt and all, there should be enough rock particles in the dirt to serve as grit.
