Can I have Peacocks with Chickens?

From 2008 to 2010 we lived 10 miles north of here and I had no issues with blackhead there. We moved to ths place that had never had poultry here, and I mean never. Only new birds I introduced were chicks and poults hatched in an incubator and raised on wire or pavement, then all of a sudden blackhead reared it's ugly head.

Blackhead is not rare in backyard flcks... Several people on BYC have lost poults and peachicks to it, as have several people here in Santa Clara County, San Benito County and Monterey County.

It's rare in commercial flocks, that is true, but not rare in backyard flocks.

Thank you for your input. I am so sorry to hear of the problems.

I am ignorant about poultry diseases, but trying to educate myself. I wonder if climate has anything to do with the prevalence of the problem. When I lived in areas with hard freezes, there were fewer pest issues in general. Mild climates like Monterey don't have bitter winters. Does that allow parasites to thrive? Just wondering.

Thanks... It's manageable with the right drugs, so I just stay well stocked. Climate and terrain probably play a part. I truly think my biggest problem is the earthworms. Do you have earthworms?

Oh, dear. Yes. We have earthworms. I was happy about that, because they are good for the garden. Sounds like they are not good for poultry?

They carry and transmit blackhead from location to location, so they are one of the primary transmitters of blackhead...

That is helpful to know.
Thankfully, my chickens are terrible at finding earthworms. The local robins are the pros. The hens content themselves with clover, blackberries and my corn plants. They are living the good life.

We have so many earthworms here that after it rains really hard and Stuart's the ground you can actually hear them... I kid you not! Once I dumped a bucket of bleach water on the lawn and there must have been 100 worms that wiggled to the surface.

Lots of bugs are hosts for poultry parasites... Roaches, slugs, snails, darling beetles, and many more....

Fowl can actually catch parasites in the very feed that we buy, especially high protein crumbles. Its the parasite eggs that cant be stopped or filtered out. Just my observation.
