Can I just scatter the grit in the yard?

Honestly.. as sandy as our soil is, I'm not sure I even need extra grit... but I want to provide it just in case....

Can I just scatter it in the run and let them scratch for it or does it need to be in a designated location?

Once my chickens get passed the fuzzy stage and get outside, the only time I will give them grit is in the winter when they're either stuck inside or can't get to bare ground. At that point I just toss a few handfuls on the floor of the coop and let them dig for it. So, yes you can toss it on the ground--they'll find it if they need it.
