As far as your ducks go, couldn't you put in a permanent/secure run, put the doghouse into the run. You could just use a hole saw to put holes into the sides for ventilation. Being inside the run, you wouldn't have to put hardware cloth over the ventilation holes.

I ended up building this out of old 2 x 6 fence boards instead. Much easier to rake out the poopy hay. My duck run is not night time preditor proof, so I needed something to lock them up at night.
