Can I make my horse trough into a bather for the ducks?

I have a rubbermaid horse trough that is about 4 feet long, 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep. The horse doesn't use it anymore and I was thinking about using it for the ducks and or geese to bathe in.

I was thinking of building up the sides and making a ramp for them to get into.

But could they get OUT of it is my concern.

I also have a 10 foot round galvanized metal one I was thinking of doing the same thing with. I just am worried that they can't get out.

Does anyone use something similar for your ducks or geese?

can you put a deck of pressure treated wood across at the water level? Two boards wide should be enough.

I had one of those rubbermaid ones and build an inside block with concrete blocks. They love it when they can sit on it while it is submerged by an inch or so, but high enough the stand on it. Worked just fine. You can also buy one of those plastic steps to get onto a horse, but you will need to drill a few holes for the air to escape so they don't float in the large stock tank.

Yes, you can use them both, I have. You can either sink them into the ground or build a ramp for them to get up to it (wood or cinder block steps).

To be sure they can get out, I built up cinder blocks at one end, so that if the water level got low they could still get out. If you keep the water level high all the time, they have no problem (but ducklings really like the cinder blocks for resting).

We use a 150 rubbermaid horse trough for our ducks...we are still working on a deck and steps so right now I put them in and take them out. But the nice thing is we put a ball valve and garden hose hook-up to it. THe hose is 50' long so I use the dirty water on all my plants and then just let the rest drain into our yard to water the grass. Its works great!

add* we are also in the process of hooking up the downspouts to the trough so the rainwater fills it! I can post a picture when its all done, but it might be awhile!

Yes you can do that. That is one of the bathers that I have for my ducks and geese and they love that it is so deep being as though I don't have a pond.

I just use concrete blocks for my tubs and pools for them to get in and out...they figure it out pretty quickly...

Wow, thanks everybody! I appreciate all the help and I am so glad to know you have done it and it works. I also want to hook mine up to a hose to drain it out and clean but couldn't quite figure out how to do that if I sunk it in.

Now to figure out a ramp...

I just put a 10 foot by 3 foot by 2 foot deep trough into the ground for my 4 2 year old ducks. They've only had large dog pools until now. Well this morning I found my female Pekin dead inside...she unfortunately drowned. I thought to myself all day yesterday about that...I hope if they get in, they can get back out...nope
