can i plant winter rye in MA and then just leave it?

Wouldn't plant it till fall of course. but could i just leave it the next season as a ground cover, to give soft stuff for my ducks' feet? or maybe it dies back? i know there are other things i could do, but i just wanted to ask about this..............

I would give it a try. I have had extra seed that I threw out in the yard and have noticed the following growing: RYE,WHEAT,FLAX,OAT,SORGHUM,MILLET.

I like having those grow far more than all the weeds,lol.
