Yes. Open topped.Open topped?
Should be fine.
IMO, minimum of 12x12x12".
If I were making them I was going to do 14x14x14 but i found some crates that are open topped and 12x18x10 so I think I’m just going to use them. Haha

Hi there!
For 7 hens, 2 boxes should be sufficient. Nothing wrong with putting the nesting boxes on the coop floor; in fact they will be less likely to sleep in the nesting boxes if the roosts are higher than the nesting boxes.
I can see this; ohhh noooo; that was my plan (the floor). We have this hoop coop thingy; nothing on the sides. Hmm, where there is a will; there is a way. Too bad I do not have a two shelf wood bookcase that I could put out there to put the nesting apparatus on.2 boxes should be fine, but 3 would spread out the layer line-up a little more.
I don't want nest boxes on the floor because I have a bad back and don't want to have to stand on my head to collect eggs.
Also, if the nests are on the floor you can get messy bedding kicked into them.
