Can I put up electric fence, or do I need to hire it done?

You can do it yourself; it's actually quite simple. No electrical knowledge required. There are basic instructions included with the fence charger, and lots of info on line.

Oh by all means do it yourself, it is EXTREMELY EXTREMELY easy!! You just need to follow a good set of directions exactly in order to ensure the fence works and avoid a lot of aggravating troubleshooting.

Post here if you have any particular questions and people would be happy to help

It is really easy to put up, i do all my fencing on the farm my self because dh can't be botherd, had electric fencing for my horses last summer (easy to move around), switched to difrent fencing this year .....was thinking of putting electric fencing around my coop in order to keep his bird dog's away. you can find some really good prices on chargers on e-bay, i have 2 bat opp one and a solor.

You will learn as you go. What you need most of all is a few good steel pole that you can get into the ground at about 2 feet.

Depending on how much fence you will be putting up, you will probably only need one pole.

Be sure to get a decent charger. do not get a solar one, they are expensive and i think they suck.

Just be sure your wire is insulated from the ground. The fence is using the ground at a point to complete the circuit, some thing that many just think is implied by the instuctions but many really do not realize.

This is why bird can roost on the wire and not get a jolt, they are not in contact with the ground.

I had a BIG ROO that had a BIG COMB and he managed to contact the wire and the ground at the same time.

He got up about a minute later from unconciousness and crowed, silly bird.

I'm sorry but just visualizing that rooster hopping up and crowing like he knew what was going on has got me laughing so hard it's bringing tears to my eyes!
