and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good advice above. Are you wanting chickens just for eggs or for meat also? Generally if people are hatching chicks they are also using the chickens for meat, since about 50% of the chicks hatched will be roosters, and it is usually the heavier or duel purpose (egg and meat) breeds that will set and hatch their own chicks. Many of the really good egg layers will not go broody. So if you want chickens only for eggs and do not want to bother with roosters, you may be better off just to but some pullet chicks every couple of years.
