as for quail enclosures theres sooo many options, from homemade to ones specifically made for quail, to bunnie hutches converted into pens for them. All i reccomend for quail outdoors is that they're on wire in atleast partof their enclosure keeps them cleaner...but if you want a full solid floor more power to ya just be prepaired to clean more.
As for button quail...remember, most button quail keepers keep their quail indoors if they live in colder climates, in warmer climates they can live outdoors year round (as long as it's warm year round). In which case the same housing applies for them, but the wire must be small so they can't escape (they are very tiny...think parakeet size).
I have a button quail hen outdoors with my coturnix quail to proove a point....to proove that button quail can survive outdoors in colder climates just lik coturnix can as long as they're in a good draft free enclosure....and so far i've been prooving that point very well...but i am hessitant to tell others to do it until my hen makes it through the whole winter...so far she's been in way below freezing temps and is as healthy as a horse...heck the other day she started laying eggs again! LOL! As long as everything goes well, winter 09' i plan to have more adult buttons outside as long as they'v ebeen "winterized" (had weeks to get used to changing cooling temps).
So! with that said i highly reccomend if you want button quails and live in a colder climate to plan to keep them indoors if you want them to thrive....as puting a quail that's been used to living indoors outside now (if you're going into winter weather) could kill them.
Now back to cages.... any type of cage will work, rabbit hutches, specifically designed to your liking pens, heck even normal chicken style coops would work well!
Have fun with it you guys is all i can say!
I arleady showed my pens on the one post so no need fo rme to repost them.....i have most of my quail in al arge rabbit hutch, and others will be in 2 x 2 ft pens (5 birds in each)<--may be considered too small for that many but i really dont believe it is they have a ton of room.
Someone should come along soon and post their pens/enclosures for ya....i hope so atleast!
