Can I use a refrigerator as a cellar?

We always hang our onions up in old pantyhose. Just put one onion down a leg, tie it off and put another on top and so on. Hang it up somewhere cool and ventilated. When you need an onion, just use the scissors and cut below the knot. (I hope I explained that right) It works really well.

I dug my potatoes, early to mid May, and have kept them in the refrigarator, at 42 degrees. They are still good.

My onions, Texas Granex, I just keep in a 20 gallon trash can. inside my mobile home, with no AC. They were harvested, early june. No sign of deterioration, so far. I've done this, once before.

Personally, I want to find an old store cooler, and set it up, as a root cellar.
