Raccoons out in the daytime do not necessarily have rabies. You can google this and find many experts who concur. Rabies is very rare. Raccoons do come out during the day if food is scarce and they are hungry, or when they need extra time to find food for their babies. Luckily for us they don't do this very often!

Yup. Perfectly healthy raccoons sometimes come out during the day, IME especially this time of year when there are babies to feed.

Basically, your risk of something climbing over a fence in the daytime to eat yer chickens is fairly low but definitely not zero.
