can i use diatomaceuos earth to worm my chickens??

Chickens do not have mammalian lungs. Chickens have interior and posterior air sacs. Air enters the trachea, half of the inhaled air enters the posterior air sacs, and the other half passes through the lungs into interior air sacs. These sacs contract during exhalation, air from the interior sacs empties into the trachea and out the chicken's mouth or nostrils (nares). The oxygen in the chicken's lungs is the same as the environment. When being exposed to DE, it is often recommended to use a respirator by OSHA since it is so easily airborne, causing an alarming rate of silica in the lungs. What enters lungs is not expelled, and they don't make respirators for chickens. I would not be surprised if many respiratory problems people experience are from the use of DE since they seem to treat birds and cannot overcome symptoms of respiratory illness. Like I've said before, just because a product is labeled "natural" does not mean it is beneficial.

What do you use/reccomend for external parasites?

I use permethrin based sprays/dip like Permectrin II or rabon-vapona based sprays/dips like Ravap EC labeled for poultry. I haven't had to do it for a number of years because I practice good management of the coops where both of those products mentioned are also used for premise treatment.

Dusts like Sevin or Prozap are used by lots of people. I've used them. Properly used, they are effective and safe. A bag is used containing the powder, the bird is placed in the bag up to its neck, and the powder is agitated to be airborne in the bag, fluffing it between the bird's feathers. Some folks have used a handful of the powder in a sock of pantyhose to control airborne dust while parting feathers and gently patting down the bird's body. They are careful to avoid the head so the bird doesn't inhale it. They then have to do it a week or so later to kill any more that may hatch from eggs. With sprays I don't have to do that since they have a 30 day residual.

Thanks. I used Sevin when I first started out but after reading more about carbaryl and it's impact I stopped. I have been using DE but am starting into aquaponics and red worms and possibly breeding some other predator insects and I am not sure I want the DE floating around either. Interested in see what different people are using.
