can i use pine straw(needles) in nest boxes as nesting material?

I use long needle pine (slash pine) as filler in my nesting boxes....girls like it just fine and its easy to clean out.

I would imagine the aroma from green pine needles would be beneficial in deterring mites as I have read does rosemary. Does anyone have any info on this as it is only a guess on my part.
