Can I use play sand for the run and 1/2 the coop?

I just dump a bag or two in the corners under the trees in my yard - the corners stay coolest when the weather is hot -so they tend to congregate there... i found some at TSC on clearance for 99 cents a bag - almost had to have a cigarette- my van did not like hauling that sand home - especially since i had 2 -50 pound bags of feed too.... but i couldnt resist that price - they love it - plus i sprinkle a little water on it in the morning - to give them a little more cool during the day

I went with sand in my coop and I love it. My one word of advice would be, whatever grade of sand you go with, ensure it is WASHED sand. I read that washing removes clay and silt, and those are the things that will hold odour. Whether that's true or not, I have had no issues with odour in my coop. YMMV.

I went with an all-purpose washed sand, and it has many different sized pebbles in a sand base. The chickens love it; they do most of their dust bathing inside their coop, when they take their mid-day siesta to escape the heat.

I found a place that sells it by calling a stone mason company nearby and asking them where they buy their sand. They had a HUGE selection of grades from which to choose. The all-purpose sand was about $4/60 lb bag, with tax included.

Was wondering if the play sand that you get at Lowes is ok for the chickens.
I want to do half of the coop in sand and the other half use the deep litter system.
Is this ok or should I just stick to the shavings in the coop.
I purchased a 40 pound bag of DE and have used this in the coop and run,
as well as new shavings. I know some sand that they sell has silicone in them.
Thanks for this post as I have some play sand and wasn't sure whether I could use or not.
Might as well use it seeing as I have it already.

I just put 3 bags of 50 lbs of play sand in run and I am relieved that my run looks decent since they already made that part of lawn ugly and almost muddy. Was wondering if it rains do I put a cover? So my sand will last longer? Prevent hardening all over? Thanks for advice! Will sprinkle some DE too all over run too. I use play sand for coop and love that I can easily scoop it out!
