Can I use this for under their waterer?

With my ducklings I use a cooling rack set in a baking tray that I set their water on to keep the bedding dry. My question is can I do this for chicks too? I change brooder bedding daily and I know chicks aren't nearly as water messy as ducks, but it's been awhile since I've had chickens so I figured I would ask (everything full disinfected of course).

My chicks weren't even close to the ducklings when it came to messes. Most of the mess I got was spilled food.
I think chicks are more delicate when it comes to brooding, but definitely less messy.

I'd just be afraid of them sticking part of their foot through the mesh somehow (I lost a chick that got her toe stuck in a crevice and she killed herself).

Is there any way to cut it down so it fits only under the waterer so they have a minimum of that surface to step on? Or maybe cover it with something like plastic needlepoint mesh attached tightly around the edges, to prevent any risk of step through?
