Can it get any worse?

There are various bits of property on my long commute which catch my eye - to see if there are any chickens or a coop in 'em. If there's a coop, the next time I pass I try to see chickens. If I see a great yard, I think "They should have chickens!"

Every time I go past the "no chickens" yards, I look again to see if any chickens have been added.

true true.

I'm just waiting for the day I run into something passing those chicken houses.
I spend too much time looking into their yard, when I should be looking at the road. Duh.

There is a house with an apartment attached not too far away from me that has chickens out in the yard.....sadly there was a lady killed a couple weeks ago that lives there and my first response while wathcing the news was " OMG that's horrible....WHO WILL CARE FOR THE CHICKENS?!?!" Turns out it wasnt the chickens owner that was killed but still.....what does that say for my thought patterns? I was all set to go offer to take them home with me.

I would've done that, like this "OH NO! Those poor chickens aren't going to get fed, or loved, or cared for... I just can't think about it, I'VE GOT TO GO GET THEM AND KEEP THEM!!"

My neighbor just got layers and when I asked her what breed, she just said "brown". I just about fell over because she didn't know the breed. We know can't see chickens or talk about them or think about them without trying to figure out what breed they are. If we pass a house with chickens we have to figure it out.
Love this thread!!! What amazing birds God has created!!!!!

Oh, yes, that IS the next step, determining the breed of any chickens we see in others' yards and coops.

My next door neighbor has RIR and BA hens, plus a Mallard duck named Daphne which was thrown in the "deal" they got with the chicks. They didn't know what the black hens were, but they knew the hens were RIRs. I told them their duck was a girl because they didn't know the difference. They have not named their 9 hens and their poultry is penned against the fence which separates our property. My flock ranges freely on my property. A couple of my lower ranking roosters like to show off for them and the ladies seem appreciative of their attention. They'll gather at "my" side of their pen and watch my roos.

They don't feed them adequately (in my opinion) but their little flock appears to be healthy enough. I talk to them all the time. Occasionally, one or two of my bantams will fly over the fence and walk around the neighbor's yard, usually checking out the pen of hens. I don't think the neighbor's hens have as developed as complex a "language" as mine exhibit.

They are FASCINATED by the "tid-bit for you, my sweet girl" calls of my roosters.

I sneak those girls commercial feed and treats every now and then.....
