I've watched birds get loaded into metal chicken trucks on 100 degree days in the afternoon. I live in purdue country, and it's not pretty. The smell is horrendous, not to mention the affects on the Chesapeake bay. I'm sorry, transporting birds during the hottest part of the day? Cruelty. I was once riding my bike to work, hot and sweaty, when a chicken truck drove by. I was literally "tarred and feathered.". Can't stand those trucks, but so thankful for them at the same time. I know many a person who stopped eating commercial chicken after being in a traffic jam next to a chicken truck.

My cousin, had came down with the H1N1 flu....the doctors there were wondering why her lungs kept collapsing. Everyone did tell them she had many birds in her house, and the dandruff of the birds were weakening her lungs.

but, these were all pet birds, parakeets, parrots, etc.

I think if you have chickens....LOTS of them like me, you should be fine. ventilation is the key....but it is bad to breathe in all the dander and poo while cleaning...so when I clean my coop I wear a nose/mouth mask, I do the same for cleaning my cat's litter pans.


I DON NOT believe chickens cause health problems...only if they crapped shed and do things in your house 24-7. its OK to bring them in! don't be scared of chickens....

that sounds SOOO sad! oh the conditions these chickens are in...and I EAT them!

I have always wanted to live in a chicken area of those meat birds...just so I could save some of them....you know what I mean? they toss out injured ones all the time....I would rescue them.

I would also rescue, but I've heard they suffer from such severe medical issues there life is short lived. I surely think even just a month of sun, fresh grass, dust bath 'o plenty, ect, would make it well worth it for them though. I hope I find one someday.

People have raised chickens for years without ill effects. As long as your girls are healthy and you practice good sanitation methods (aka clean out the old poo regularly) there is nothing to worry about. So many people are misinformed about chickens. Just think... you eat chicken from the store raised in stressful conditions and the most hostile environment ever and are ok. How could having them happy in your backyard hurt you?

That is a good point. My happy and healthy chickens probably will not hurt me much.

Hi All,

Background...

I have 17 BO's that are about 3 years old.
They get fresh water and food daily, plus treats.
They free range in my backyard eating fresh goodies
I use deep litter method in a coop with a wooden floor, I do a complete cleaning once a year.
I worm them yearly and dust them.
All in all I say I take very good care of my girls to the point of spoiling them.

I post this thread because I came in contact with someone who said that owning chickens
can make you sick if not kill you. He sited all the diseases that they can carry and
the chores of cleaning the coop and pen can be hazardous to you health.
He does have a condition that he said his dr calls chicken coop disease which
results in a bad cough and lung problems. He did at one point work at a chicken
farm which he says the illness came from.

Now I am concerned and a bit confused on what position I should take in dealing with my girls.
In a nut shell, I am a little bit scared.

Those who have kept chicness for a long time or been around them for most of their lives,
is this something that I should worry about. Should I fear for my health because I own
backyard chickens.

No, keeping chickens will not kill you or make you sick. I've been keeping chickens for 37 yrs and no, this is not something you should worry about. That one person worked in a vastly different environment than your chicken coop and he did it daily, where as you use deep litter that you only clean out once a year. Sleep easy, you will not sicken and die from your chickens.

I guess they can kill you my grandparents and their parents and their parents raised chickens and they are all dead, But it could be because they all where in their 80's and had some sort of health problems that killed them too (cancer, heart problems, dementia, the list goes on).... But as far as I can tell on my limited research the leading cause of death is being born, I have yet came across anyone whom died whom was not born first,,,,,
