Can Mandarins be kept in trios?

I have 2 drakes and 5 hens and all is well. I feel if you are running multipules it is best to have more hens than drakes. When I have run pairs in the past the minute the hens comes off the nest the drake really run them hard and have actually had them kill the hens.

In this case i stick to aggressive or maybe Serial Killer Rapist-
considering there killing the hens.
