Hey everybody,
I just read a very good article on here about treating impacted crop and sour crop. I checked my poor hen for impaction because she was very unlike herself but I did not feel any symptoms of being eggbound. I did give her a couple warm epsom baths which she uncharacteristically endured with calmness and patience. I then administered a syringe of soft coconut oil which she tolerated well and massaged her crop for ten minutes. I used the upward motion as directed but I do not understand what draining means. Does that mean vomiting? Or does that mean the food passes through the crop normally? It is in quotes - as in "drain" - so I could not determine if it was a euphamistic term for vomiting or if, in fact, the impacted food is expected to move in the normal pathways. Any clarifications would be great and much appreciated. Apologies as English is not my first language though it is my preferred language now.

Thank you in advance.

Hello! You mentioned 2 issues with your hen- crop impaction and being egg bound. Is she showing signs of both? As for the coconut oil and draining, it just means that in the next few hours you should continue to periodically massage her crop and it should start to get smaller as the food finally makes it's way into her digestive tract. If the crop doesn't seem any smaller by tomorrow, continue the coconut oil, but also purchase some miconozole 2% to administer orally to help prevent any further fermentation in the crop. Hopefully this helps!

Ah, my apologies. I initially thought she was eggbound because she was not herself. This hen is 5, fairly compact like an americauna, a good layer, and spunky. So I performed the warm epsom baths and inspected her vent. I did not feel the usual symptoms of being eggbound. No distended belly. No drooping tail. No periodic straining or exertion to poop etc. During the epsom bath, I felt her crop to be very full and firm. I, at first, took this as a sign she was still eating and foraging but watching her after her baths made me think otherwise. She would have spurts of normal chicken activity like scratching and pecking but I saw she was only half heartedly pecking at pebbles. She did not eat or drink much at all. But thank you for the reply and clarification! We shall start the antifungal tomorrow and continue with the coconut oil and massages.
