Can meat birds and layers eat the same food?

Planning to get some chickens for the first time, and trying to figure out the best way to have a "dual purpose" flock.

I would like to be able to keep all my chickens together in one coop and have a variety of breeds represented.

I'm thinking 10-12 hens and 1 rooster.

Can I feed the same type and amount of food to birds that are being raised for meat that I would feed to birds raised for laying?

Forgot to add that I'm considering a "meat-only" breed, such as a Cornish Cross for the meat birds. As opposed to raising all "dual purpose" breeds...

It depends on what you are getting, if you are planning on x cornish, then no they have to be bythemselves and eat a very high protin feed, whitch make them fat in 8 weeks.
But if you get dual perpose like buff Orp then no problem they can stay in the same coop and eat same feed.

Thank you for the reply. That was what I was thinking about the Cornish X birds.

I guess I will either go with an all dual-purpose flock, or set up a separate coop/pen...
