Can my bird be saved? :(

I felt two other hens, their crop area was smooth and maleable. Hers has a sharp, boney feeling. I will massage again. And give oil/calcium.

Anything else?

Thanks so much

I just noticed her this way today. Is it frostbite? Why is she all puffy?

Thank you for your help.

Thank you all for replying. To my knowledge, she ate yesterday and the day before. We both saw her eat when we took the treats and feed out. I’m not sure about the last time she laid.

I spoke to our vet yesterday who doesn’t treat chickens, but has chickens. She supported treating her for being egg bound and giving her some tlc. (She also offered that most hens aren’t egg bound, but are prone to tumors.) I brought her inside, gave her an Epsom salt bath for 20 minutes, lubricated her vent, gave her strawberries and a crushed up tums with olive oil.

When I took her the strawberries, she pecked at them but hasn’t eaten it.

I also massaged her crop. It wasn’t big, but it was hard/boney. Not sure if that’s the way it normally is.

Since I have taken her out of the bath last night, she’s been sitting with this labored breathing.

She’s not doing well at all.

I lubricated the vent again and do not feel an egg, but her vent area does seem swollen.
Sounds like your Vet is on the right track.

I wouldn't feel for an egg anymore, it's not productive.

Giving her the TUMS should work just fine, I'd just give it to her directly instead of mixing with oil which can easily be aspirated.

If her crop is not big, but hard/bony, it doesn't sound like she has a crop issue. She may be malnourished a bit if she's really bony. Sadly this is often the case with hens that reproductive disorders and a hen in this condition can decline quickly, so this may be what's going on with your girl. I'm sorry.

If you lose her, have a necropsy performed through your state lab, this will give you the most information. https://www.metzerfarms.com/poultry...yivowqRD9zojxDkcG2ElnrL7P_PG0JrAnJ7LmUs3QxZn6
