Can my chickens get COVID

It's been a year since I got chickens, and they mean everything to me. Can they get COVID? Yes or no! I would like to know, so I can keep my chickens safe!
Even if it were possible for your chickens to get Covid they would need to be exposed to another animal or human infected with Covid to contract Covid.

My chickens managed to catch it, everyone in the house was sick, I was the last one to get it. I tried to stay outside with the chickens to avoid getting sick. All six of my chickens look like they are really struggling, they're really hot and breathing hard. I've got a fan on low for them and a fresh bowl of water. I don't know what else to do. They are all eating healthily.

Could also be Avian Flu? Or just hot weather? Either way I'm not sure what you can do except ride it out, and maybe give them some extra vitamins.

Hope your family is all OK.

They cannot get the same COVID that humans get, but there is a variation of coronavirus that they can get with similar symptoms -- respiratory problems, sneezing, etc.

Humans can NOT get this corona virus from poultry. And poultry can NOT get the human version. They are species specific.

But if your chickens ever show symptoms like constant sneezing (not when eating, that's just throat clearing), gurgling sound in the chest, and the comb and face looking purple, then they could have one of the respiratory diseases that does affect chickens.

The most dangerous one is Newcastle. This can be vaccinated for.

IBV is Infectious Bronchitis virus. This has to run its course. There's no treatment, but good food, clean water, and sunshine help.

Mycoplasma is caused by bacteria and antibiotics can help treat it.

Again, these can NOT be transmitted from chickens to humans.

Hope this helps.

All is well. I noticed some nasal swelling and they had some head shaking snot slinging going on, but that cleared up by the end of the day. I already feel completely fine myself.
I know covid requires ACE2 receptors to infect cells, I don't think birds have that, but that doesn't mean the virus can't randomly mutate some secondary method for infecting cells in other animals than it's target host. It just won't be very effective when it does.

As another poster says, Covid 19 is just one type of corona virus. There are loads of different (and milder) ones in various species that cause cold and flu like symptoms.

My money is on bird flu. Humans can get that from birds. Similar respiratory symptoms to Covid 19. And it's quite virulent at the moment. Do you have State Infomation page showing pockets of infection in your area? We do in the UK. You can look it up.

Or it could be any other common respiratory infection.

Glad you are all OK.
