Can my chicks be eating too much grit (sand)?

I use play sand. It's just sand, says so right on the bag, nothing added. But you do want to check before you buy to make sure because sometimes, there is other stuff in there.

I gave my 3 weeks olds some granite grit (paver base). they won't dust in it, only eat it. They didn't get sick and seemed happy. I took it away and will give them some good sand out in their run.
