Can nutritional problem cause lame chicken?

If you feed chicks- rangibg in age from 9 to 12 weeks layer feed- can the extra protein cause chicks to go lame?
 
I assume you're refering to too much calcium? Not real sure but I've heard on BYC that too much calcium can cause problems with the roos. The other side of the problem, I had one chicken get sick with improper diet. Too much carbs and not enough protein. He nearly starved to death with a full crop!
