Can people who never touched a chicken raise chickens!?

I have 10 chickens comming. I worry, but I know with this forum we will be ok.

I did own one chicken before. She was hatched at my college in embrology class. We all hatched one. Mine is the only one that lived. She was kept in my dorm on my desk in a shoe box and my desk light over her. I fed her cornmeal and bird gravel from the pet store. I did not know much! My roommate could not stand the peeping when we went to bed so I ended up sleeping with her nestled between my neck and my hair! I had her for about 5 years and she gave us wonderful white eggs every day! Memories.............

I have just about the same amount of experience as you do, i have only once held a chicken. But im still obsessed with them! I haven't gotten any yet, but I think i will some time soon. I call my obsession project chicken.

Hi Hangin Wit My Peeps,
I just got my first chics on March 3rd. That was the first time I have ever touched a chicken big or small.

Everything will be fine, have fun and good luck,

I'm going to try to post a picture of it and see if this works. Anyway I have seriously considered running to fleet farm and picking up an incubator!~ This is from an Ameraucana

Don't kid yourself! You will definately want to build your coop much bigger than you think you need because once you get your chickens it's almost guaranteed that you will want/get more!!!! Ok, I've got my girls and I'm happy. . . no, wait a minute, I just love those - ok, I'll get a couple. Now, I'm happy. . . .oh gosh, what are those? I've got to have some of those. . . . Ok, I'll get a few of those and now I'll be happy. . . Oh, look at the adorable chicks in the brooder at the feed store!! Well, I'd sure like to have one or two of those, even though I just came in here for layer pellets. Oh my gosh!!! I think my rooster is finally fertilizing some eggs!!! And look, I've got a broody hen!!!! HHHMMMMM!!! How can I possibly just let her sit there without any eggs to brood? Ok, I'll just put a few under her, let her hatch them, and then I'll be happy. . . . .

And so it goes!!!!

And the moral of this story is. . . .
Better build a coop with plenty of room!!!

All the advice on building a bigger coop is correct! Listen to your fellow enablers......uh, BYC'ers. I started with 5 chickens, then went to 9. I am expecting an order of 25 the first week or so of May.

So do the right thing, build a bigger coop.

I am starting to think my coop is too small with all you people. You are all bad influences!!! I just figured out my coop size will alow me a max of 24 chickens. I have day olds, 10 of them , comming May16th. I do really want more already! I am sitting here saying "well, I did not get my fave the BA's, some orps would be nice, hey maybe I do want silkies after all.........." It is crazy!

I even called the feed store I placed my order with to see if they ordered extras!! They said no. The only way I would get extras is if someone does not pick up their order. And they would be all the breeds I already have. I need to bribe DH to let me make an order as well! He says, "lets see how these 10 work and next year if all is well you can order more then." I WANT MORE NOW!!!

Cathy my DH wanted me sto stop at 5, then at 9. After a couple months of raising chickens, he let me order 25 more. Give it a little time, but I am sure you will have more before next year!
