Can RIR mix chickens lay brown eggs?

All egg SHELLS are either white or blue, as I understand it. Having said that, some eggs get a "finish coat" of brown pigment just before leaving the hen. If the egg is white, the egg will look some shade of brown, depending how much of that finish coat it gets. It may be very light, like pinkish, or dark like chocolate. If the egg is blue, that finish coat results in a greenish or olive colored egg.

So yes, your two hens, though genetically similar, can each lay her own unique looking egg.

I have some Brown Leghorns. They have white earlobes. They will lay white eggs. One of them already did!

What color are their ear lobes? Red generally means brown eggs. White generally means white eggs.

With the OP's cross, that should prove true.

I don't know, the earlobe color thing doesn't apply to all breeds.
Silkies have blue earlobes and lay beige eggs(I think)
Cream Legbar have white earlobes and lay blue eggs.

I hadn't gotten the chickens yet, they are around 6 weeks old and im getting them today or tomorrow, thanks for the tips! i will check the earlobes, im planning on getting around 12-16 chickens they are all barnyard mixes pretty much between any chicken, lol. she has bantams, ameraucanas, leghorns, etc. I'm pretty excited since i haven't had chickens in almost 4 years.

Real Am's or EE's?
Man, you could get any colored eggs from that mix.....earlobes probably won't help.

Real ameraucana, the ameraucanas aren't mixed, sorry i forgot to mention that, the reds i think are mixed with white leghorns.

You'll get mostly brown colored eggs with a varying level of color saturation. You'll also get some green/olive colored eggs and possibly some light blues depending who the Am's bred with.
