Can runner drakes successfully mate with call females

Quote:
Here in Victoria we have that I know of Blue fawn, Brown, Apricot, Silver & White- so not a great deal of colours down here either with the well known breeders.. I also know of a lady that has some other wonderful colours as well and does a bit of experimental colour breeding . I will have a chat to her and Pm you some details if you like.

Yes, they have. I've talked to two different breeders about this and got different takes on it. One breeder had been working on this project for a few years when he lost that part of his flock to predators. He's starting the project again this year or he started again last year, I forget which. He's breeding smaller runners to bantam ducks and trying to do it that way. The other breeder I spoke to said that there are a lot of problems using that method because getting the runner body type back would be extremely difficult. Unlike most breeds where you can breed them to a smaller duck and then mostly work on color, with runners there isn't anything small that comes close enough to make it an easy task. He says the best way would be to start collecting small sized runners that are already true in body type and breed down that way, then all you need to worry about once you've gotten the size down is the color. It's a project I'm wanting to take on once I have more genetic and breeding knowledge and of course the smaller runners to work with.

OHH!! I will def be following this thread. I cant wait to see the results!!

And Isnt it odd when people assume the larger ducks are the parents??? WHen I took my two scovie drakes to the fleamarket, everyone that didnt know duck breeds thought they were the parents to my Magpie x runners!

Hey bemba! I PM'd you back as well. He does look like he is Pied. He is really beautiful. In the one profile shot, he almost looks Bibbed but in the full body shots, he really appears to be Pied. I would be almost positive he is Pied which would be really rare with Black, so definitely start a breeding project with him. It will be interesting to see what you end up with!

And to think that I got rid of my smaller runners the girls where half the size but looked like true runners...... I to am experimenting with colours this year I have left the boys and girls to there own devices so when hatching starts it truly is a OH wow look at that one lol.
I actually got a dark grey with splashes of white and a splash of dark apricot and all three colours where solid so i will try and post some pics. I am in Vic so if i can help by sending up some eggs to you in qld I am more than happy to help. I havent been setting the smaller eggs from the smaller hens as I am after big strong birds so if you want I can collect from them and send
cheers
