Can Safeguard paste be dissolved in food or water?

I'm ready to give my Safeguard after giving the Wazine 2 weeks ago. Everyone must be worming these days as the feed store was low on wormers. I got Safeguard paste-10%, as instructed by many here. Can that be dissolved in food or water? I know I can do the BB sized "treat". I'm sort of dreading trying to catch all 30+ of them. I'll have to do it in the eve as they go in to roost. But...is the paste disolvable and if so can I put it in food/water?

Unless you give it to each one separately, you have no way of knowing how much they are getting, so if you use the paste, you can't put it in food for a group.

If you are treating that many birds you will need to get the Liquid Safeguard goat wormer. Then you mix 3cc per gallon in their drinking water. Best if they are penned up and take away the water for a bit to get them good and thirsty to make sure they are drinking... unless it is very hot were you are... like here : )

You can't give paste wormer to chickens. The dose is so little, and you can't shake up a tube of paste to distribute the worm medication evenly, so you dont know if you're giving nothing, or a lot.

I get the Ivomec injectable and put, I think (Ill have to check) 6cc per gallon, give it to them for 2 days. Works great.

i don't give Ivomectrian down the throat, I have herd that it can be very had on the liver and kidneys that way. I think in this case with that many chickens, Safeguard would be your best bet. I use Ivomectrian but only topical for chickens in either the pour on or the inject able version applied to skin.

I have used paste wormers most of the time. If you think about how they are manufactured, the paste is well mixed well before the put it in the tubes, so it would seem to be mixed up just fine--it doesn't separate in the tube that I've ever seen. The dosage is not all that tricky, either, since you can't really overdose them on Safeguard easily. Up to 100x the needed amount can be given without harmful effect is what I've read, though you wouldn't want to do that, of course.

That said, I am going to switch to Valbazen, after consulting someone whose knowledge I trust tremendously. It kills worms over a period of several days so there is no "plugging up" the system with dead worms, plus it gets every worm a chicken can get.

speckledhen where do you find Valbazen and is it a paste? If it is a paste, how do you dose the chickens and how much at a time. Forgive me OP for "jacking" your post. I have not wormed my chicks yet and have been wondering how you do this and what is the right stuff to use for chickens. Horses are so much easier!

Safeguard paste is easiest to give by putting a "pea" size paste on a piece of bread and give each chicken a piece, they gobble it up. Valbazen is a liquid and can be purchased from jeffers livestock online or by phone. I put 1/2 cc/ml on a piece of bread and give it to each chicken. It can be given orally with a syringe as well. Zimectrin Gold and Quest Plus are pastes that will kill roundworms and tapeworms...overall I prefer valbazen, but I'll be alternating with eprinex in the future.
